The dog in the manger 'of Lope de Vega, National Classical Theater Company

The Dog in the Manger by Lope de Vega is a palatial comedy, written between 1613 and 1618, at a time of creative maturity, which coincides with the publication of Fuenteovejuna, La dama boba and steel Madrid.

Lope presents a clever play of love that the title it with a popular saying (the gardener's dog neither eats nor lets cabbages eating), warns input and humorous sense of the work. Countess Diana, which is the "dog" to which the title alludes, He not allowed herself falling in love with his secretary Teodoro, or allow love Marcela, one of her ladies.

The characters belong to the nobility and are surrounded by their vassals (secretary, Scorts, created, Butler…). The frame contains two basic structures: the love triangle (Diana-Teodoro-Marcela) supplemented by the presence of rival (Fabio, Ricardo, Federico) and the usual pair of trouser-funny (Teodoro-Tristan) ranging interlacing jealousy, strategies, offensive and counter-love, until the passion eventually spill over into the last act.

As often it happens in the comedies of Lope, It will be the strength of ingenuity to help the triumph of love, which it is the great universal leveler because it allows break down social barriers apparently stronger.

The issue about the impossible love between a humble man and a highborn lady, and resolution Happy, the demonstration that the young man was also of noble origin, already it existed in ancient Greek Byzantine novel and has been treated by others as Matteo Bandello and Boccaccio. But Lope de Vega becomes a topical issue in an exceptional work by the visual richness and power of its metaphoric and symbolic images, and the importance of all the characters, they have a higher role of mere extras, with parliaments of extraordinary poetic richness; all are intelligent, Rogues and cunning,, all they pretend or deceive if it is to seek happiness.

Lope de Vega explains in this work the eternal conflict, between the desire for freedom and the constraints imposed by fate (conventions, social requirements, lineage or cradle that chance has). It is a fully current conflict in its essence, but it is expressed in the work by moral philosophical worldview own Baroque where these concerns were presented, through allegorical ideas on Destiny, the Fortune, the occasion, the disenchanted… We will see how the characters express their desire for freedom through the myths and under the playful tone of comedy, the unbearable lack of freedom that all the characters suffer from perceived, regardless of their place in society. Diana can not choose because it is on top of the social pyramid, and Teodoro dares to challenge the Hado, even if I could even lose life.

Teodoro achieve become the Earl of Belflor, by leveraging Diana ambivalent words about their wishes to him; it quickly adapts to the changes of fortune (the amorous ups and downs of Diana) or opting for Diana Marcela according to changes; He is able to play with feelings, and it is prudent, it does not respond words of love to the Countess until it has taken the first step, "Asking hand" after faking a symbolic fall. Teodoro knows how to manipulate feelings of love and never forget that your goal is to get the love of Diana and Belflor County.
