The Laboratory of the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital has identified the values of the biomarkers from which the severity of the SARS-CoV-2 disease can be detected (COVID-19).

The novelty of this study is that it is carried out with a blood test and its determination can be achieved in about 60 minutes.

This has been possible thanks to the work of the specialists of the Clinical Biochemistry service, who have evaluated the blood tests that are done routinely in the emergency room to detect the infection.

They have detected the precision of each biomarker to differentiate between patients with and without COVID-19.

The professionals responsible for the study have established six suspicion criteria for COVID-19 with the lymphocyte and eosinophil count in the blood.

and with:

  • Plasma ferritin levels
  • Lactate dehydrogenase
  • C-reactive protein and d-dimer.

The 91% of COVID-19 patients met one or more of the criteria with these biomarkers.

Patients who do not meet any of these criteria, Coronavirus infection can be excluded with a high probability.

These biomarkers are available in all hospitals and are quickly determined on automated analyzers. (in less than 60 minutes).
