Why the Maria Luisa Park in Seville is so named?

Maria Luisa Park in Seville is the most famous city park and inside the Plaza of Spain is. This park area comprised the former private gardens Palacio de Montpensier, Actulamente called as PALACIO San Telmo. As the building was built as the headquarters of the College-University Seminar Mareantes, after becoming the Colegio de la Marina. Hence the name of San Telmo palace, San Telmo as is the patron saint of sailors.

In 1849, The building was acquired by Antonio de Orleans and Maria Luisa Fernanda de Borbón, the Dukes of Montpensier, who adapted the building to make it his residence in Seville.

Later, Duchess dying, The gardens were donated, at the request of Dona Maria Luisa, to Seville to make it public park for the city. So in gratitude for their donation, the park was named Maria Luisa Park. Leaving the palace of San Telmo today as the seat of Government of the Junta de Andalucía.

She was the daughter of the Dukes of Monstpensier, Maria de las Mercedes, who wed with our King Alfonso XII. Although their marriage was brief due to a tragic death.
