The tourist visit to the Archivo General de Indias is free, facilitating access to the historic area from Tuesday to Sunday, except for days 1 and 6 January, Holy Thursday, Friday and 24, 25 and 31 December.

Schedule

Tuesday to Saturday: of 9:30 a 17:00.Domingos y festivos: of 10:00 a 14:00.

No need to request appointment, except above groups 20 people.

Simón Ruiz Envito (belorado, 1525 - Medina del Campo, 1597) perhaps the best known businessman of sixteenth-century Spain, thanks to the preservation of their extraordinary documentary archive, unique in its kind in Spain, that offers an endless flow of news about his life and career. This "merchant banker" is set to Medina del Campo -the "Villa de las Ferias"- toward 1550 as cloth merchant, Wholesale trading genres with imports from Nantes and Brittany; with this activity, achieves a considerable fortune that allows you to start a second professional stage in which, without forgetting the merchandise trade, participates in large financial businesses, even to make loans to the Crown. The last years of his life were devoted almost exclusively to the construction of a large hospital, his last work of patronage; with the rank of General Hospital, It is built up from 1592 and 1619, namely, does now precisely 400 years old.

The exhibition unfolds through three thematic chapters which coincide with the documentary that make your file: the first dedicated to the character and context, the second to its business and financial affairs and the third to the aforementioned charity: General Hospital. In separate room, It has provided a specific section dedicated to active trade with Seville and the New World.

Documentation regarding exposed, include your home address trade, composed of commercial letters, bills of exchange, book quotes, marine insurance, ledgers, seats with crown, etc. As for the collection of artistic works that enhance documents (mostly also belonging to the heritage legacy of Simon Ruiz), paintings by Hernando de Esturmio exposed, Juan Pantoja de la Cruz and Felipe Gil de Mena, sculptures by Juan de Montejo, reliefs of Pedro de la Cuadra, Brussels tapestry Willem de Kempeneer ..., and, along with them, everyday objects and goods linked to commercial activity as boxes cambista, counter German origin, coins, Bucks, chips ..., and other related documents linking Simon Ruiz with great personages of the time like Philip II, Don Juan de Austria, Alejandro Farnesio, Ambrosio de Spinola ..., even with Miguel de Cervantes or Santa Teresa de Jesus.
